Ficus lyrata, commonly known as the Fiddle-Leaf Fig, is a popular indoor plant known for its large, glossy, violin-shaped leaves. Proper plant care is essential to keep your Ficus lyrata healthy and thriving. Here are some general guidelines:

  1. Light: Ficus lyrata prefers bright, indirect light. Place it near a north or east-facing window where it can receive filtered sunlight. Avoid exposing it to direct sunlight, especially during the hot afternoon, as it can lead to leaf burn.
  2. Temperature: These plants thrive in average room temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C). They are sensitive to cold drafts, so keep them away from windows or doors that might expose them to chilly air.
  3. Humidity: Ficus lyrata prefers moderate to high humidity. If the air in your home is dry, consider using a humidifier or misting the plant occasionally to increase humidity levels.
  4. Watering: Allow the top inch of the soil to dry before watering. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it's essential not to let the plant sit in soggy soil. During the growing season (spring and summer), water the plant more frequently, and reduce watering during the dormant period (fall and winter).
  5. Soil: Use a well-draining and fertile potting mix. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and pine bark is a good option. Good drainage is crucial to prevent waterlogged roots.
  6. Potting and Repotting: Ficus lyrata doesn't like being root-bound, so you may need to repot it every 1-2 years. Choose a slightly larger pot with good drainage when repotting. Spring is the best time for repotting, as it allows the plant to recover more quickly.
  7. Fertilizer: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed your Ficus lyrata with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks. In the dormant season, reduce or stop fertilizing altogether.
  8. Pruning: Regularly remove any dead, yellowing, or damaged leaves. You can also trim the plant to shape it or control its size. Prune in the spring or early summer for best results.
  9. Pest Control: Keep an eye out for common houseplant pests like spider mites, scale insects, and mealybugs. If you spot any, isolate the plant and treat it with appropriate insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  10. Placement: Once you find a good spot for your Ficus lyrata, avoid moving it frequently, as it may lead to stress and leaf drop

Remember that each plant is unique, and you might need to adjust the care routine based on the specific conditions in your home. With proper care, your Ficus lyrata can grow into a stunning, healthy indoor specimen.
